LED TVs are sure becoming popular. They’re energy-efficient and provide great pictures. But Mitsubishi thinks it has something even better: a TV that is illuminated by lasers. Its which is part of Mitsubishi’s Diamond line, is a 65-inch rear projection 1080p HDTV using Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology. The laser replaces a bulky and energy-sucking lamp to illuminate a DLP chip filled with millions of tiny, reflective mirrors. Laser illumination also eliminates the color wheel used by single-chip DLPs. Both reductions result in a rear-projection TV that is about 10 inches deep. (FYI: The footprint of a flat-panel TV sitting on a stand is about 10 inches deep.)

According to Mitsubishi, lasers provide the widest range of rich, complex colors—along with the greatest clarity and depth of field among all the illumination technologies. LaserVue’s color gamut, or boundary of color it can display, has been measured at approximately 200 percent, delivering over twice the color of all of today’s HDTVs. And from repeated viewings, I can certainly say that it does.

Let’s not forget how energy-efficient the laser is. Think LED TVs can save you some bucks on your electric bill? The 65-inch LaserVue can operate at less than 100 watts, which bests the most efficient 42-inch LCD TVs now available.

Mitsubishi has also added specially designed optics, improved viewing angles, 120-Hz refresh rate that helps with motion lag and judder (eliminating jerky motions from fast-moving scenes), upconversion of lower resolution signals to 1080p, Deep Color capability and x.v. Color. The set is housed in an attractive high-gloss black cabinet with an ultrathin frame.

So how was it? Let’s just say that the L65-A90 produced some of the best images this reviewer has seen. This is not an overstatement. The colors were deep, rich, very realistic and precise. Image quality was out of this world, with a palette of accurate and intense colors simply not seen on other displays.

From my trained eye, one could easily see that Mitsubishi’s claims of “twice the color” are true. Contrast, brightness and clarity were also outstanding.

Using this set with Samsung’s BD-P1500 Blu-ray Player, it displayed vibrant 1080p images that popped on films like “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Fall,” “Speed Racer,” and “Disturbia.” Images from D5 masters (as close to film and Digital Cinema quality as possible) were also viewed including “World Trade Center,” “Shrek,” “The Love thecar,” and “Transformers”, so that the full range of LaserVue‘s color gamut could be seen and appreciated. In each case, the color palette exceeded that of plasma and LCD 1080p HDTVs, providing the most accurate colors with amazing reds and blacks.

Our only real nitpick with this TV has got to be its $7,000 price tag, which we can forgive if future units become more reasonably priced as volume increases. We hope it does, because LaserVue deserves a place in today’s TV world. It’s too good not to.

Different styling treatments have been more popular than others but the same core strengths, reliability, versatile seating, comprehensive specification, driveability and the three years unlimited mileage warranty have been, and still are, the reasons to own a Shogun.

Today’s looks are more acceptable. Sharper styling lines have replaced the bulbous rounded look, it looks a classier vehicle but it is a big and in your face true 4x4.

My test model was one of the expected main sellers the Shogun LWB 3.2 DI-DC Diamond model with automatic transmission priced at £34,684, but with added options topping out at a hefty £35,053.

This is serious money and reflects the up-market specification of the vehicle. In recent years generally the Shogun has moved away from being a workhorse for the ‘landed gentry’ and become a luxurious business vehicle with flashy alloy wheels, wide tyres, luxurious leather interior and executive car technical specification.

Somewhere along the line in the last few years we have lost the rear differential lock, important for off-roading, and the adjustable suspension height and ride comfort settings.

Yes the new Shogun might be more refined and up-market but it still retains the capability to tough it out with the best of them off-road, providing sensible grippy tyres are fitted instead of the current standard road versions.

In specification terms this Shogun lacks for nothing, seven seats in three rows, the fold away rear row of seats increases the load area, there is air conditioning, electric windows throughout, loads of airbags, cruise control and rear view parking camera.

In addition there´s two/four wheel drive, high low ratio gear selection, a fantastic navigation, sound and information system, technical programmes governing stability, braking and traction control and even an electronic compass, barometer and altimeter.

The ride comfort is fine, the handling is better, but still nowhere near the performance of the BMW X5 for instance. It rolls, it pitches but then it is a 4x4 off-roader at heart, not a 4x4 big wheeled car or people carrier.

The revised 3.2-litre, 168bhp, 373Nm turbodiesel engine is better and cleaner but is cannot match the latest Land/Range Rover, BMW, Mercedes or Audi engines.

The auto transmission is smooth and easy to use especially when it comes to selecting two or four wheel drive, high or low ratios, very user-friendly.

Top speed, compared to the competition, is a modest 110mph with 0-62mph taking 12.9 seconds. Fuel economy is shown as 26.7mpg in the combined cycle. Not a chance in reality as my test car returned a very poor 19.7mpg for on-road use, and less for a period of off-roading.

The emissions at 280g/km are not good either putting it in the highest vehicle excise duty Band G of £300 this year and £400 next year. It will suffer if the proposed road pricing and higher rates of congestion charging plans are adopted.

The Shogun legend lives on but it no longer leads the way, which is a real shame.

This is an awfully strange move for Mitsubishi - sharing a platform between a compact ’sporty’ car and an SUV is an odd fit, for sure. I have a feeling we’ll see a too-heavy Lancer.The new Lancer does have a longer wheelbase than it’s predecessor, though it’s a few inches shorter, and a bit wider. The looks of the car are actually pretty darn nice. It’s hard to make a good looking compact car, but the Lancer delivers in that area.

The biggest obstacle I see for the new Lancer is that it’s a 2008 model. That means it has to adhere to the new EPA gas mileage testings - and that means lower mileage on the sticker. Will it affect sales? Only the coming months will tell.

Tokyo - Mitsubishi Motors Corp on Thursday lowered its earnings forecast for the fiscal year that ends on March 31 because of slow auto sales and the yen's recent rise against other major currencies.

The Japanese automaker dropped its operating profit projection to 50 billion yen (514 million dollars) from an initial 60 billion yen. Such profits would represent a 54-per-cent drop from last year.

The company also cut sales for the full year as the global financial crisis roils credit and stock markets and has sent sales down.

Mitsubishi projected its sales would be 2.36 trillion yen, down from an initial estimate of 2.65 trillion yen, but it maintained its net profit projection at 20 billion yen.

For the July-to-September quarter, Mitsubishi saw its net profit decline to 2.5 billion yen from 2.6 billion yen a year before.

Operating profit grew 20 per cent in the second quarter to 15.3 billion yen from the year before on sales of 603.9 billion yen, down 12 per cent.

Operating profits, a company's earnings minus interest payments and taxes, are seen as a measure of its earnings power from ongoing operations. (dpa)

Mitsubishi Motors UK’s race-prepared Lancer EVO X made its racing debut in this weekend’s Britcar event at the Silverstone circuit. Mitsubishi have become the latest Japanese car manufacturer to scale back their racing activities after pulling out of cross-country . The withdrawal will also cover the Dakar Rally despite the team dominating the event in recent years. The company said it was a cost-cutting measure caused by the economic downturn.

"The sudden deterioration of the global economy made it necessary for the company to focus its resources more tightly," said Mitsubishi in a statement. The withdrawal follows Honda's shock exit from formula one in December.

Mitsubishi won the Dakar Rally 12 times in 26 appearances, including a record seven consecutive victories from 2001 to 2007. They took part in this year's Dakar Rally, switched to Argentina and Chile because of security fears in Mauritania which forced the cancellation of last year's event.

Honda, which has forecast a 190bn yen (£1.4bn) operating loss for the second half of the fiscal year ending in March, withdrew from formula one to reduce costs amid a slump in global car sales. Their departure from the sport was quickly followed by the withdrawal of rival carmakers Subaru and Suzuki from the world rally championship. Japanese motorcycle maker Kawasaki also followed suit last month by pulling out of motorcycling's MotoGP championship.
